Milk, the taste of childhood Rich in calcium, milk is essential for the development of bones and muscles
Have you ever wondered what life would be like without milk? In the
first weeks of life breast milk is the only food a baby knows. After a while
babies start on formula. Milk is used for a few months until the
babies can digest other foods. In the animal world the offspring of many
species also feed on breast milk. This illustrates the importance of milk in
our lives, especially during childhood and adolescence. Milk is a valuable
food, as it provides our body with the calcium, protein and vitamins (A, D
and B12) it needs. Drinking milk helps boost the immune system and builds
strong bones, muscles and teeth, and also prevents a range of disease
Drinking milk in adulthood
According to nutritionists, from 6 months to 10
years of age, a child should drink up to 3 cups of milk a day. In
adolescence, the ideal is 2 cups. From 18 to 50 years of age milk is not so
important. Adults can replace milk with
dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese, and other types of food rich in
protein and calcium. However, for people over 50 years of age, milk is
important again. At least that is what a recent survey conducted by a
Canadian university says. According to this study, milk is more effective than water in hydrating children
and people over 50 years of age. Although milk is a highly nutritious drink, some
people are allergic to it and some people are lactose intolerant.
