International Workers’ Day (World Labor Day)

World Labor Day is celebrated on May 1st. A Socialist Congress held in Paris in 1889 established this date in honor of the general strike which had been held on
 May 1st, 1886, in Chicago, the main industrial center in the United States at that time. It was on that day that thousands of workers took to the streets to protest against the terrible working conditions in the factories. They demanded a reduction in the working day from 13 to 8 hours. However, this protest was violently repressed: 11 people were killed and two hundred injured, besides many arrests.
