31- 01 - 2014 Carnival in the Northeast - origem do carnaval -trio elétrico

Carnival in the NortheastThe liveliest street carnival in the worldA Samba Theme?[1] Samba Schools? No way! In the Northeast the carnival is all about the people and the floats [2]. Here we go through a few interesting facts about carnival in Salvador, Recife and Olinda

Salvador has one of the liveliest [3] street carnivals in the world. In the capital of Bahia state carnival lasts for a week.  It only ends on Ash Wednesday [4], when the floats meet at “Praça Castro Alves.” The city hall seals [5]  off 25 kilometers of streets and squares for revelers [6] during the event. In 2011 more than two million people took to the streets of Salvador, enjoying the sound of dozens of carnival floats. This great festival creates over 200,000 temporary jobs. The floats, some of the greatest symbols of Bahian carnival, were invented by the duo Dodô and Osmar. In 1950 they put two speakers in an old jalopy and went through the streets playing frevos. In 1951, Dodô and Osmar replaced the jalopy [7] with a truck [8] and invited another musician to play with them, so creating the first carnival float in Brazil. Over the years, the floats took off [9].  Other great symbols of Bahian carnival are the African carnival groups, which promote African culture. The most famous are Ilê Aiyê, founded in 1974, and Olodum, founded in 1979. Another important group is the Afoxé Filhos de Gandhy, founded in 1949. In 2012 carnival in Bahia will celebrate the centenary of the birth of the writer, Jorge Amado.
