Cold front: Brazil below zero
In the same week that Pope Francis came to Brazil for Word Youth Day, several Brazilian states were hit by one of the severest cold fronts in decades . A large mass of polar air made it snow [1] in dozens of cities in Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul on July 22 and 23. The snow even reached the metropolitan areas of Curitiba andFlorianópolis. The cold front also hit the Southeast, Center-West and even two northern states: Acre and Rondônia (which are usually hot even in winter). On July 24, the maximum temperature recorded during the afternoon in São Paulo was only 8.7 degrees. It was the coldest afternoon in the state capital in 52 years. Due to[2] the relative humidity [3], at around 90%, and the gusts [4] of wind, the wind chill [5] factor made it almost zero degrees in the state capital. In Rio, the thousands of pilgrims who went to WYD experienced a lot of cold weather throughout the week. In Santa Catarina, the cold was even more intense (read the article on the next page).

The coldest cities in the Southeast
The coldest cities in Brazil are in the southern states. But there are several other cities in other regions of Brazil where it also gets very cold in winter. Campos do Jordão is one.  The cold weather and the natural beauty of this city in São Paulo state attract hundreds of thousands of tourists from June to August. In Rio de Janeiro state, the coldest city is Nova Friburgo, which is in the mountain region, where historic towns such as Teresópolis and Petrópolis are. In Minas Gerais, the coldest city is Monte Verde.
